Overview & Reviews
A high-performance turbo model debuts this year. A small spoiler over the rear window is the only exterior telltale that the Bug next to you has the 150-horsepower 1.8-liter turbocharged inline four from the larger Passat sedan under the hood.

Fun car with a few minor bugs - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By fourfish - November 28 - 10:00 amIve enjoyed this car since buying it new in 99. Door rattles were and window switches were all fixed under warranty. Had an $650 repair at 41K to replace a gas tank breather tube (engine check light was on). Overall, its a fun car.

Bugged Out - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By dbug - November 13 - 1:13 amI have owned the car for two years. I bought it with 33k miles on it and it now has 86k. The major problem I had with the car was the plastic grill. A plastic highway cone hit the front grill and broke it. $3600 dollars worth of damage! Then a week after I got the car back the compressor failed. The VW dealership who did the work claimed that one didnt affect the other but since they had to take the entire front of the car apart it seems rather suspect. They want $1700 for a new compressor. Everything on the car is plastic and either breaks or falls off. I wont be buying another VW product.

Amazing Car - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By BeRocketMan - October 30 - 10:00 amThis is one of the most trustworthy cars Ive ever driven. The only downside is that its rather low to the ground and can cause problems on bad pavement, but you will have that with any low car. Overall this is an excellent car!

A true gem - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By sunnygirl - August 30 - 12:10 amAfter the purchase of our 99 beetle we have only been back to the dealership for oil changes, nothing else. We purchased the car through the CPO program and never looked back. This car is the best car we have ever owned, hands down!

VW Luv my bug - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By NancyP - July 2 - 10:00 amOkay, only owned it for 2 months, but what a joy to drive! Responsive in traffic- big plus. Shifting a breeze with the 5-speed. Cuter than cute! Safe, fun, performs when asked-- what more could you ask for?

German Engineering? Yea right!!!! - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By goingback2 - May 29 - 10:00 amI dont even know where to begin...At 10000 miles a brake light switch went out not covered under warranty! Then at 25000 battery went dead and thanks to VW for the special size, that was a nice $200 bill(again not under warranty). I have battled with the power window switches that are tempermental, the auto door lock at 7mph that works half the time, the drivers side window that doesnt want to go up, the gas door that wont latch and have I mentioned the horrible rattling and vibration at any speed over 25mph? The interior pieces are notorious for falling off. This car turned to junk after 6 months of ownership.
